Italy is prone to getting volcanic eruptions because it rests near the boundary of the Eurasian and the African plate, and volcanos are generally found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging.there was a volcanic eruption at mount Etna, which is located at the city of Sicily. One of the more destructive eruptions happened in 2002,28 October, and lasted for almost a year. Mount Etna is Europe's Largest and most active volcano. Mount Etna is located above a subduction zone formed where the Eurasian and African plates collide. In this subduction zone a window has torn in the subducting slab. the picture above shows a view of the cross-section area of the plate tectonics under the volcano.the eruption threw up so much ash that it could be easily seen from space and it fell as far away as Libya, which was 600km south the Mediterranean Sea. Many facillities were severely damaged or destroyed during the disaster. surges of lava descending the steep slope above the tourist complex commonly associated with the Rifugio Sapienza has destroyed at least two buildings, cut the Provincial Road 92, and an explosion possibly caused by invasion of a cistern by lava has injured 32 persons. some people have called mount Etna a friendly giant, because of the little casualities during the eruption.Seismic activity in this eruption caused the eastern flanks of the volcano to slip by up to two metres, and many houses on the flanks of the volcano experienced structural damage. The eruption also completely destroyed the tourist station Piano De Lagoon, on the northeastern flank of the volcano, and part of the tourist station "Etna Sud" around the Rifugio Sapienza on the south flank. There have been two attempts to control the path of lava flows threatening to destroy the town of Catania. The first was in 1669, and the second was in 1992. During the 1992 attempt, the United States Marines worked with Italian volcanologists to develop “Operation Volcano Buster”, in which they used explosives to blast a hole in a lava tunnel on Etna’s flank and then dropped large blocks of concrete into the hole to try and stem the flow of the lava. Like the 1669 attempt, however, this plan was ultimately unsuccessful. the government declared it a state of emergency. i think that the government can make some precautionary measurements prior to eruptions, and evacuate people quickly when the volcano is about to erupt, that way, damages ca be minimised and lived could probably be saved. the villages can also play a part by keeping an emergency bag which contains all their important documents which they can take and run if the volcano erupts. there should also be adequate temporary homes for those who are left homeless, so as to be efficent and to protect everybody. in conclusion, everybody plays a part to prevent damages and losses during natural disasters.
there is a video of the eruption in this url.
